Big news for European badminton – Spain, Russia, France and Denmark will be hosting World Championships in the next years.

Today it was announced that Spain, Russia, France and Denmark will be hosting one or multiple of the World Championships in the upcoming years.

For the first time ever, Denmark will host the Thomas & Uber Cup, when the big team event will take place in the Danish city of Aarhus in 2020. The successful bid from Badminton Denmark means that the Thomas & Uber Cup is back in Europe for the first time in 36 years.

Marin on home soil?
In 2021 the BWF World Championships will be played in Spain, and let’s just cross fingers for Carolina Marin to do well on home soil.

The World Championships 2023 will take place in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, where the 2019 European Mixed Team Championships also will take place.

In 2025, the World Championships will also be played in Europe. The city of Paris will host the World Championships, which means that the World Championships return to Paris, which also hosted the event in 2010.

Kazan in the spotlight in 2019
Already in 2019, the first World Championships kicks off in Europe. The host of the 2018 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships, Kazan, Russia, will be hosting the World Junior Championships.

In 2022, the youngsters will fight for the title in Spain, while the World Senior Championships in 2021 also will take place in the home country of Carolina Marin.

Cities still to be confirmed
The BWF President is, of course, happy about these decisions.

- We were lucky to receive some outstanding bids, all with the same forward-thinking vision like us. Following an exhaustive assessment period, we were able to determine the host cities and countries that represented the interests of the sport best, BWF President, Poul-Erik Høyer, said.

- We would like to thank all parties involved in this process and look forward to venturing to new locations that have not had the honour of hosting our Major Events before, he added.

All bids will now go into a second and final phase of evaluation, where the last details of the bids will be clarified before contractual finalization, where, in some cases, the final bid city will be confirmed and then announced.
