The search for volunteers for the Scottish Open Badminton Championships is now underway following the opening of the application process.

The third oldest event in world badminton, the Scottish Open will be played over five days from 21-25 November at the Emirates Arena.

During this time approximately 300 athletes from 40 countries are expected to descend on Glasgow, with Kirsty Gilmour leading the home challenge as she attempts to defend her women’s singles crown.

In addition, thousands of schoolchildren from all over Scotland will visit the Big Hit Badminton Festivals, an innovative participation event run by Badminton Scotland in conjunction with the Scottish Open, designed to introduce more youngsters to the sport.

Volunteers will play a vital role in the experience offered to athletes, officials, media and fans during the event, supporting a wide range of functions including spectator services, accreditation, transport, logistics and coaching and development activities.

"The Scottish Open promises once again to be a memorable event and our volunteers will be at its heart," said championships director Keith Russell.

"From assisting the athletes to providing a friendly and welcoming service to the spectators at the Emirates Arena, our volunteers always play an absolutely vital role in ensuring the Scottish Open is a success.

“We know we already have a committed community of badminton volunteers who will help make this event special, but we would also like to open this opportunity to others throughout Glasgow and Scotland who would like the experience of helping to run a major sporting event.

"This is a great opportunity for you to join a fantastic team to play your part in one of the world’s most established sporting events."

Billy Garrett, Director of Sport and Events at Glasgow Life, said: “As our hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and this year’s European Championships have shown, there is always tremendous interest from the people of Glasgow in volunteering at major sporting events held in the city and our volunteering community has an unrivalled track record.

“They are often the first point of contact for competitors, officials and spectators, and their enthusiasm and knowledge of the city is infectious; setting the tone for the successful delivery of our events and driving so much of the buzz and excitement.

“Joining the Scottish Open team is a terrific opportunity for local volunteers to get involved in the next major sporting event taking place in Glasgow and to build their skills and experience, which will stand them in good stead for making the most of volunteering opportunities in the future.”

The Scottish Open is being staged by Badminton Scotland with support from Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council and Event Scotland and will run from 21-25 November at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.
