Even though the men’s double final at this year’s French Open did not end in a traditional manner, Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen seemed on their way to victory, when Isara had to retire in the first half of the decider.

After a semi-final spot the following week at Yonex Denmark Open, the Danes made their way a step further yesterday, in Paris.

With straight sets all the way to the final, apart from their match in the first round, the Danes found themselves in the first Superseries final since Yonex-Sunrise Hong Kong Open in 2015.

Their opponents, Bodin Isara/Nipitphon Phuangphuapet of Thailand, did not look like they were going to give them an easy win. Throughout the first set, the energetic Thai constellation showed great strength opposite the calm and experienced Danes.

The first set ends in Thai favor; 21/19. A close set, where they kept each other company throughout the set. In the second, Boe and Mogensen found a way to escape and managed to get a 6 point-lead. They kept that lead, even as it looked like the Thai were climbing back, and could with some comfort walk into the deciding set after 53 minutes of high quality men’s double.

Unfortunately, only three points into the third, Bodin Isara takes a bad fall and injures his knee. It was soon clear that he was in agaony and was not able to continue.

Even though, the Danes had a three point-lead at the time, and looked more confident than ever in the match, it was not how the Danes wanted to victor.

Nevertheless, a Superseries Premier semifinal the following week and this Superseries win cannot change the fact that Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen have proved they are back for good, and they could take the highest step to the podium in Paris, with the assurance that they still can be among the world’s best.
