Badminton competitions begin tomorrow

Zagreb, Croatia, is these days hosting the European University Games (EUG 2016). During 15 days of July, 500 students from 45 European Countries and more than 300 Universities will compete against each other in 21 different sports.  

Badminton is one of the compulsory sports, along with Futsal, Basketball, Football, Tennis, Table Tennis, Volley Ball and Handball. Optional sports include: Beach Volley, Rowing, Rugby 7s, Bridge, Chess, Golf, Judo, Basketball 3x3, Karate, Sport Climbing, and Taekwondo.  Tomorrow, July 19, 2016 will be the first day of the Games’ badminton competitions.

With the draws being published later today, the competition will consist of two tournaments; A Team Tournament and an Individual Tournament. A match in the team’s tournament, where 22 universities will participate, consist of one match in every category; women’s singles, men’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles. For the individual part, a tournament in every category will be conducted. These tournaments are compulsory for participating teams, and entries to these tournaments only are not allowed. Participating universities are from countries all over Europe, and competes in badminton are from Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Delegations of the participating Universities should consist of minimum two and maximum six, both female and male athletes, assisted by three officials. Furthermore, each delegation playing in the team competition may enter the individual competitions with a maximum of three men’s singles, three women’s singles, three men’s doubles, three women’s doubles, and three mixed doubles. 

The draw will be done in the presence of a EUSA representative taking into account BWF, NSF and EUSA Badminton ranking. 

Finals will be conducted July 24; one day before the Closing Ceremony in Rijeka.
