World champion Carolina Marin was crowned as the women's singles champion of the Yonex All-England. The Sunday finals saw the 21-year-old Andalucian, who created one of the biggest sensations in badminton history last year by winning the world title, create another by becoming the first Spaniard ever to win an All-England Open title.
Marin did that with a 16-21, 21-14, 21-7 victory over Saina Nehwal, the world number three from India. Nehwal threw away a 6-1 lead in the second before the Spaniard turned on the style to win 16-21, 21-14, 21.
“I was making too many easy mistakes and my hand was really nervous at the start, but then I just wanted to enjoy it,” said Marin after her 62-minute win.
“This is quite amazing for me,” said Marin. “I lost to her every time before, so to beat her like this, and in this tournament, is very special indeed.
“It was special when I won the world title - so many people met me at the airport - and this feels very special too. We shall see how people react this time.”
Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen celebrate their 2nd All-England title
Denmark's Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen, the number two seeds, were in inspired form as Fu Haifen and Zhang of China lost 21-17, 22-20. It is the second title for Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen at the All-England after their maiden triumph in 2011.
Chen Long fought back from a set down against Denmark’s European Champion Jan Ø. Jørgensen in the final to claim his second YONEX All England men's singles title. Jørgensen looked well on his way to a maiden title at the championship when he won the first set 21-15 but the Chinese superstar rallied to take the following two games 21-17 and 21-15.
