BWF Suspends Russian Badminton Federation

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has suspended the membership of the National Badminton Federation of Russia (NBFR). The decision was made at the BWF Council meeting on 11 November 2023.

NBFR was found to be in breach of BWF conditions of membership, by including within its jurisdiction territories that fall into the jurisdiction of another Member, as recognised by the international community. These are the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia.

The decision will be subject to confirmation by the membership at the 2024 AGM in Chengdu, China.

The process allowing players with a Russian passport to participate in BWF-sanctioned tournaments as ‘independent neutral athletes’ remains in force. BWF will amend its procedures to allow direct registration by such players.
