Bozen/Bolzano is the capital of the region of South Tyrol, the northernmost region of Italy.
The majority of the region's population is of German mother tongue. Since World War I, the region has belonged to Italy. Badminton has a long tradition in this region, many Italian champions come from South Tyrol.
A month ago, Bozen/Bolzano hosted the Italian National Junior & Youth Championships (all ages) and thus the most important junior & youth badminton tournament in Italy. This latest sporting event was organised by A.S.D. Sport Promotion Bolzano.
Just one month later comes the next good news for badminton. Bozen/Bolzano will host an international U17 tournament for the first time. This is part of the Badminton Europe U17 Circuit. Historically, there has never been a stage of the U17 Circuit in Italy, which is promoted by Badminton Europe, so the 'YONEX Bozner Cup U17 International' will be important in this aspect as well.
The sport hall in Bozen/Bolzano (Stadthalle Palaresia) will serve as the venue place, from 28th to 30th April 2023. The municipal Sporthall was opened in 1987 for the European Handball Championships and holds 3000 spectators.
The Sport Promotion Bolzano association with President Csaba Hamza organises the tournament under the patronage of the Federazione Italiana Badminton.
Yonex brand will be the technical sponsor of the event. The event will be also supported by the province of South Tyrol and the municipality of Bolzano.
Since 2015, there has also been a badminton school in South Tyrol (SBS - Südtirol Badminton School), which promotes talents from Italy and abroad. With Yasmine Hamza and Katharina Fink, the SBS has the two best female players in Italy. Both are about to enter the top 100 in the world rankings in singles, in doubles they are among the best 70 in the world. The goal is to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games.
