There is no doubt that the stock of Rasmus Gemke is on the rise after the 21 year old lifted his second BWF tournament title in under a year as he beat Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon in today’s final of Barcelona Spain Master Super 300.
Gemke won the Bitburger Open GPG last year and backed that win up with its equivalent in Spain in three games. In Germany last year the Dane beat the Thai player en route to the title and once again it took three sets to separate the players.
Gemke got off to a nervous start loosing the opener 21-15 but washed away all those nerves to win the second 21-6. The third set was always going to be tight and at 11-11 it was there for the taking. It was Gemke who seized the initiative and powered home 21-14 to lift the title.
-I was nervous to start but then found a rhythm. I had beaten him before and knew if I could play strong against his powerful attack I could win. It’s a big step for me to win this title.
Mia Blichfeldt lost out in the women’s singles final letting slip a match point in the second game to Minatsu Mitani. The third set was one set to far for the Dane and the Japanese ran out an easy winner 21-8.
Nohr & Thygesen take giant leap forward
Niclas Nohr and Sara Thygesen (pictured above) have been regular winners on the BEC circuit over the past years. Today in Barcelona they took a giant leap forward winning the Spain Masters Super 300.
In a very tight match against top seeds Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith the Danes came back from a 19-14 deficit in the opening game to win in two sets.
- This is an important win for us. It shows we can compete and win at this level. The big thing for us now is to go on and compete regularly at this level and higher in the future.
World Champions Matsumoto and Nagahara lifted the women’s doubles title as expected and in the final match of the tournament there was a winning return to top level competition for Lee Yong Dae as he and partner Kim Gi Jung lifted the men’s doubles title.
