European Champion Carolina Marin defeated China’s former world number one, Wang Shixian in the women's singles final of the Yonex French Open (275.000 US Dollars) at Stade Pierre de Coubertin on Sunday.

Wang was on the verge of taking the opening game thanks to an 18-16 lead, but the second-seed Marin rallied to win five points in a row to seal the game 21-18. In the second game, a deflated Wang struggled to compete as a superb Marin ran away with the match being fully in control on the way to her 4th Superseries title. The Spaniard won the second game 21-10 in the shortest final of the day.

When Carolina Marin is playing like she was playing Sunday evening at the French Open, it isn't just world class badminton. It's a demonstration of a new level in the women’s singles category. So fast. So offensively-minded. So powerful. Playing Carolina Marin these days can be a nightmare for her opponents.

Conrad/Kolding: “It was just not enough today”

Mads Conrad and Mads Kolding were the favourites among the French Open crowd for Sunday's final, but it was not enough to help them beat world number one duo and hot favourites for the title, Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong of Korea. The Danes lost in two games 14-21, 19-21 - in their second appearance in a Superseries final.

“We tried our best, but today it just was not enough. Especially in the second game, we did a lot of things right, but in the end we came down short. But we have had an unbelievable week here in Paris and it has given us some memories for life and a lot of confidence. We are now very close to reach out big goal of the season, the Superseries finals in Dubai. We love the amazing crowd here in France and we promise to come back next year and give it another shot for the title”, Conrad and Kolding wrote on their official Facebook page.

Former world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia clinched his third French Open title with a 21-13, 21-18 win over Taiwan's defending champion Chou Tien Chen.
