Viktor Axelsen retained his Olympic title when he beat World Champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn comfortably 21-11, 21-11 to secure his second gold medal and third consecutive Olympic medal as the only player to have done so.

This is a remarkable feat for the former world number one whose 2024 has not been an easy one, where he has struggled to regain his winning streak as many have come to expect for him – except the Malaysian Masters, where he managed to win.

"I'm in shock, considering it’s a double Olympic gold in men's singles. Not many people do that, not many people will do that. Lin Dan, who was the best to ever do it, did it, now I have done it. It's completely crazy," Axelsen told DR NEWS.

As for how he would celebrate Axelsen mentioned, with a cheeky smile on his face, “I never get drunk, but today I will get crazy drunk, maybe even for two nights."

And he sure has earned his right to celebrate after this enormous feat.

It has been an incredible Olympic Games to cover. We would like to thank all of our members, all European athletes, organizers, and volunteers, and a special congratulations to Viktor Axelsen who brought a second gold medal for Denmark.
