During the last day of one of the annual Board of Directors’ & Commission meetings this weekend, time was set aside to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the confederation.

On this exact date, 24 September 2017, we remember the 50th anniversary of what was then founded as European Badminton Union (EBU) in Frankfurt, Germany.

- The foundation of the European Badminton Union in 1967 was with the main purpose to organize European Championships, General Secretary since 2003, Brian Agerbak explains.

- Now known as Badminton Europe Confederation, the organization is involved in a variety of activities all around the development and promotion of badminton in Europe.

The backbone of the organisation
Besides the name-change in 2006, a lot has changed over the years since eleven founding nations took the first steps towards a European badminton confederation.

- The activities have expanded over the years but the Championships are still the backbone of the organisation.

On this day, the confederation consists of fourteen board of directors, 10 commissions with fifteen external commission members, 52 Member Associations and twelve staff members, the last-mentioned works daily from the headquarters in Brøndby, Denmark.

Bright future
General Secretary Agerbak emphasises that each of the member associations play an active role in shaping the future for European badminton.

- I still see a lot of potential in the Confederation and I am of the opinion that we so far have been exceptionally good in adapting to circumstances and following the trends, that not least the technological advances have made possible.

- The future looks bright even if there is still a lot of work to be done on a Continental level and within each of our 52 Member Associations.
