The fourth seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen won an all-Danish men’s doubles final against Mads Conrad and Mads Kolding, 21-17, 21-13 to claim the Yonex German Open title on Sunday.
For the younger duo it was a revenge from their 2016 European Championships finals when they lost to their compatriots Kolding/Conrad in three games.
„German Open Champions - It’s an amazing feeling to stand on top again at a Grand Prix Gold tournament. Thanks a lot for the support all week“, wrote Kim Astrup on his official Facebook page. And Skaarup added: „We are so happy & proud.“
The final of the men's singles at the Yonex German Open 2017 saw two Taiwanese competing against each other for the title. Chou Tien-chen, Taiwan’s top player and No. 6 seed at the 120.000 Dollars tournament, scored an easy win over his compatriot Wang in two straight games, 21-16 and 21-14 to clinch his first Yonex German Open title.
Adcock’s run ended in the semis
English mixed duo Chris and Gabby Adcock saw their Yonex German Open run ended in nailbiting fashion as they narrowly lost out on a spot in the final.
After easing past their quarter-final opponents on Friday, the Adcocks came into Saturday’s last-four clash with eighth seeds Zhang Nan and Li Yinhui with high hopes of progression.
For the Adcocks however, attentions turn to the start of the YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships on Tuesday, with a clash with Yong Kai Terry Hee and Wei Han Tan first up for the seventh seeds.
There will be an all-Chinese final in Mülheim on Sunday as Zhang and Li take on compatriots and number one seeds Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong for the mixed doubles title.
Carolina Marin retired before her final
Tournament’s top seed and Rio gold medallist Carolina Marin suffered an injury straight after her semi-final victory on Saturday and was forced to withdraw before her final against Japanese shuttler Akane Yamaguchi.
Vittinghus and Holst reached quarter-final spots
Emil Holst created one of the upsets of the tournament in the Western German city of Mülheim when he beat five-time Olympic champion Lin Dan in straight games (21-10, 21-16). In the quarter-finals, Holst - a former European Junior Champion - lost out to the eventual champion, Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan.
Hans-Kristian Vittinghus had to retire in the beginning of the second game of his quarter-finals match against Olympic Champion Chen Long due to an injury .
„Very disappointing end to my week here being outplayed by Chen Long in the first game and injuring myself in the process. Simply had to withdraw, made no sense to carry on. Doesn't feel good right now, but we will see how it develops over the next few days. Still hoping to be fine for All England on Wednesday“, Vittinghus said on Facebook.
