During November of 2016, Badminton Europe (BEC) organized a name competition for our mascot on our social medias. Now, with one week until the 2017 European Mixed Team Championships begins in Lubin, we can reveal proudly reveal the final name of the BEC Mascot.
A competition was organized to design the mascot in 2015 and now in the beginning of 2017 – the 50th Anniversary of the European confederation – the name for the mascot is final.
suggested by Jelle Botman
Jelle, 18, lives in Sint-Oedenrode and plays for Rooise Badminton Club in the Netherlands.
“I really love to play badminton! I have played for six years already and my favourite player is Lee Chong Wei.”
He wrote his suggestion via Facebook and was informed yesterday:
“I chose Smashy because I like to smash and if you want to be the best you need a good smash.”
Fans and followers were encouraged to take part in naming the BEC mascot on our social media during November of 2016.
At the Board & Commission Meetings held in Copenhagen, January 27-29, the Fan Base Commission shortlisted the suggestions, and the final decision was made at the board meeting by a vote amongst the BEC Directors.
BEC received several fans who suggested “Smashy” as the mascot’s name. In order to be fair to all the others who proposed the same name, a draw was therefore conducted by the Chair of the Fan Base Commission, Kevin Scott to find the receiver of the prize. The other contesters have been informed and a YONEX racket will soon be on its’ way to Sint-Oedenrode.
The mascot’s look and design was decided by the board, as well, and made its’ official debut at the 2016 European Club Championships in Tours, France. The winning design was made by Panuwat Sangiam from Thailand.
Now our mascot is complete with design and name; Smashy will be present for the 2017 European Mixed Team Championships in Lubin and it cannot wait to meet you there!
