Thomas & Uber Cup Finals have begun

Sorensen_EWT08Following an exciting qualification for Europe played in Almere, the Netherlands in February 2008 the successful qualifiers have now arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia to rival qualifiers from the other four continents.

12 teams have qualified for the Finals for both the men’s team event and the women’s team event. Europe has three teams in both events. For the men’s teams: Denmark, Germany and England; For the women’s teams: Denmark, Germany and Holland.
The Thomas Cup:

In group A China are the clear favourites and are expected to reach the final and retain the trophy. They are facing Nigeria and Canada.

Zwiebler_EMTCIn group B England is drawn against Korea and Malaysia. England has brought a young team and they are facing a tough challenge where they can only surprise.

In group C Denmark are meeting New Zealand and Japan. Here Denmark are favourites but still have to perform well against a talented Japanese team.

In Group D Germany are playing against the hosts from Indonesia and Thailand. Germany will be eager to make a good result against Thailand and perhaps tease the favourites from Indonesia as well.

The semi finals are predicted to be China-Malaysia and Denmark-Indonesia.

The Uber Cup:

In group W Germany has been drawn against mighty China and against USA. The second place should be within reach for the well balanced German squad which would be a good set off for further progress in the event.

In group X Korea are meeting Hong Kong and South Africa and must be considered clear favourites.

Judith MeulendijksIn group Y Denmark is playing against Malaysia and New Zealand. The match against Malaysia will be the deciding match in the group and the winners will be hoping that this would bring them close to a podium place.

In group Z the Netherlands have been drawn against Japan and Indonesia. This is perhaps the closest group of them all and the Netherlands can certainly not be happy that they are playing both their opponents on the same day. Let’s hope they can still make a win in order to progress with some promise for the final stage.

The semi finals are predicted to be China-Korean and Japan-Malaysia
