The qualification stage is still on at the YONEX German Open 2023. The German players have already secured their first wins on home soil.

Players are currently battling it out on court in the qualification stage of the YONEX German Open 2023. With the main draw already starting later today for the mixed doubles, it’s still to be seen who will make it out of the qualification stage.

Those playing on home soil seem to have gotten to a good start this morning in Mülheim.

Kai Schaefer got off to a solid start with a win against England’s Raymond Webster, 21-1 21-2. “I feel quite good, it wasn’t the toughest match for the first round. I’m looking forward to the next round”, said Schaefer.

He’s facing young Danish talent Magnus Johannesen in the next round of the qualification, a match that is currently being played. “I expect a tough opponent, I have to play a decent level to beat him,” said Schaefer ahead of the match.

In an all-German match, one of the first to be played in the tournament this morning was a clash between Samuel Hsiao and Max Weisskirchen. Hsiao faced an opponent that he knows very well.

“I thought it was unlucky to play my teammate but it happens. I know that he is a very relaxed player, and we know each other very well from training,” explained Hsiao after the match. Hsiao secured the win in straight games, 21-18 21-16.

There were two more wins for Germany in the mixed doubles. Bjarne Geiss/ Emma Moszczynski won their match against Austria’s Philip Birker/ Katharina Hochmeir, 21-9 21-13, and Patrick Scheiel/ Franziska Volkmann beat Gianmarco Bailetti/ Martina Corsini, 21-19 21-15.
