The Netherlands have booked their tickets for the European Mixed Team Championships in Aire-sur-la-Lys, France, from 14 - 18 February 2023. The squad around Selena Piek and Robin Tabeling won their final qualification match on home soil in Haarlem. They beat Estonia 4-1 and took one of the five remaining spots in the #EMTC23. In all remaining groups, we got one step closer to finding a winner with the final matches being played on Sunday.

Let's have a look at Saturday's action: 


Group 1: 

England and Poland both won their ties 4-1 and will face each other for the final on Sunday afternoon. England started the day in Milton Keynes with a walkover as the women's double from Norway had to retire pre-match. After Gregory Mairs and Jenny Moore extended the lead with a win in mixed doubles, Markus Barth kept Norway alive with a win over Cholan Rayan in men's singles. But England managed to close the tie with two more victories to make it 4-1.

In the second team match of the day, Slovakia was off to a good start when Milan Dratva won the opening men's singles against Mikolaj Szymanowski 21-14, 21-13. From that point on, Poland took over winning the following three matches in straight games and closing the tie with a three-game-victory in mixed doubles.

Group 2: 

The Netherlands stood up to their role as top-seed and managed to qualify for the EMTC 2023 as the winner of their group. In the final showdown against Estonia, the Dutch found themselves under pressure after losing the women's single to start the tie. The fans in Haarlem were treated to many exciting games, which were all won by the home team in the end.

In the morning session, Israel won its first tie of the week beating Italy 3-2.

Group 3: 

After three days of badminton in Sursee, Switzerland, the audience has only seen one result so far. All six ties in Group 3 ended 5-0. Today it was Ukraine beating Hungary and Spain beating Switzerland in front of a massive home crowd. The group final between Spain and Ukraine will be played at 10.00AM on Sunday morning.

Group 4: 

In Group 4 we will see a final showdown of host Scotland against Sweden who rallied past Ireland with an impressive 5-0 victory. Badmintonfans in Glasgow witnessed a men's single marathon of 92 minutes between Ireland's Nhat Nguyen and Felix Burestedt from Sweden. Burestedt won the thriller 21-17, 17-21, 21-18 in the end. Sweden continued to win all the other matches in straight games. 

In the afternoon session, Scotland delighted its home fans with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Czech Republic. Solely Jan Louda in men's singles could stand up to the Scottish dominance and achieved the only point for his team. The group final between Scotland and Sweden will start on Sunday 11.00AM CET.

Group 5: 

Even though the Austrian team made a great effort in the stands and created a great atmosphere in the hall, the players on the court could not stand up to Finland. The Northmen started strong and were quickly ahead 4-0. Austria's final victory in the women's doubles could not prevent Finland from advancing.

In the group final, they will face host Bulgaria. The team around the Stoeva Sisters battled their way through to the final beating Belgium in an intensive battle 3-2. Belgium made an effort, winning men's singles and doubles, but an ankle injury of their best women's singles player Lianne Tan stole their chances in what could have been the deciding event.
