Despite several European players waving goodbye to their chances of a medal in today’s quarterfinals at the HULIC DAIHATSU BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2022, there are many more who have secured their spot in the podium.

There will be many to watch in tomorrow’s semifinals, with many interesting matches in which players will fight for a spot in the finals. In the WH1 – WH2 mixed doubles, Spain’s Ignacio Fernandez and Austria’s Henriett Koosz took on Shashank Kumar/ Ammu Mohan, India, and got into the semifinals with a win in straight games, 21-15 21-5. Henriett Koosz will also be playing in tomorrow’s WH1 women’s singles semifinals; she will be facing Yuka Chokyu, Canada.

In the WH2, Rick Cornell Hellmann, Germany, has not just won his men’s singles quarterfinal against Takumi Matsumoto, Japan, but he’s also secured himself a medal in men’s doubles with Thomas Wandschneider after their win today against Israel’s Konstantin Afinogenov/ Amir Levi, 21-15 21-7.

Today, England’s Rachel Choong had two challenges ahead — two matches, in SH6 women’s singles and mixed doubles. She faced Carmen Giuliana Poveda Flores, Peru, but lost in straight games. “I went into the match wanting to improve on my performance from when we last faced each other earlier this year in Canada. Although it’s not reflected in the score, I feel like I did that, so I’m happy enough”.

It was a happier result in the SH6 mixed doubles. Choong and Jack Shephard defeated Natthapong Meechai/ Chai Seayang, Thailand, 23-21 21-19. “Very pleased to have beaten Thailand - improving on our result from a couple of months ago when they took us to three. Shepherd played an absolute blinder, and we feel like we’re developing well as the week goes on”, said Choong.

Choong is more than ready for tomorrow’s semifinal. “Tomorrow, we’ll face the Indonesians again as we hope to get our revenge from the group match and book our place in the final”, added the English player.

Amongst France’s stars, Olympic medallists Lucas Mazur/ Faustine Noel will be playing in tomorrow’s SL3 – SU5 mixed doubles after their win against Hary Susanto/ Leani Ratri Oktila, Indonesia, 21-15 21-11. Mazur will also be competing to make it to the final, having won his SL4 men’s singles match.

Noel, two-time medallist in the World Championships, will be playing in three semifinals, meaning that she has already secured herself three medals. Besides mixed doubles with Mazur, she will also be playing in the SL4 women’s singles semifinals against Norway’s Helle Sofie Sagøy — a rematch of the 2015 final —, and she will also be playing with Lenaig Morin in the SL3 SU5 semifinal.
