Plenty of Europeans guarantee their spot in the Round of 16

On the second day of the YONEX Dutch Open 2022 players have been fighting for a place in the second round.  

Starting in the morning with the women’s single match, Lianne Tan (Belgium) against Jordan Hart (Wales) the victory was clear for the Belgium player 21-12 21-8.   

Polina Buhrova, who last week played in the Bulgarian International Championship and was one of the only two Europeans making their way to the podium, faced Clara Lassaux from Belgium, winning 21-17 21-10. “My performance today was good, I’m happy. I was a little bit nervous, because I know this hall and the previous time for me was complicated to control the shuttle”, says the Ukrainian player: “But it was a good match, I can control my emotions”. 

In her first singles match, Spain's Clara Azurmendi was up against Denmark's Anne Fuglsang. Azurmendi won in three games, the last game being an easy 21-8 win. The Spanish is not only playing singles, as she is also in the women's doubles draw where she is teamed up with compatriot Beatriz Corrales. In their first match they played against Eleanor O'Donnell from Scotland and Lizzie Tolman from England, winning 23-21, 21-17. 
 
Denmark's Mads Christophersen was up against the winner of Austrian Open 2022, Yeoh Seng Zoe from Malaysia. Mads Christophersen played a strong match, making his way into the next round with a 21-19 21-16 win. His next opponent is German Fabian Roth.  

Christo Popov, representing France and Victor Svendsen from Denmark, played a powerful and intense match. In this highly anticipated matchup, Popov won 21-19 21-19, making his way to the second round.     

Mark Caljouw, Netherlands, faced Tobias Kuenzi, Switzerland, in a tough first game where Caljouw won by a two-point-difference of 24-26. In the second game Caljouw wins 21-12: “I’m quite happy to win. It was a little bit tricky. I think there was a little bit of drift, but I’m happy to manage to win in straight games”. The Dutch player also mentioned the pressure that comes with playing on home soil but looks forward to the next few days.     

The English men’s doubles pair Callum Hemming and Ethan Van Leeuwen also had their take in today’s round of 32 and faced Irish duo Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds, in one of the most exciting matches of the day for the fans. The English men’s doubles won 21-17 21-18 and conquered a spot in tomorrow’s round of 16.
