Mark Lamsfuss was the man of the moment yesterday. The rare feat of winning in both the men’s doubles and the mixed doubles categories was last achieved by Jens Eriksen of Denmark, back in 2002. 

Taking the court in the first match of the day, he partnered with Isabel Lohau against the title favourites Thom Gicquel/ Delphine Delrue. Having lost the opener and down 17-19, the Germans fought back hard to force a decider. 

- We were encouraged by the tricky and tough second game. It was very close. In the decider, we were acting more than reacting. I think that made the difference, Lohau reflected. 

While the French took an early lead, Lamsfuss started finding winners as Delrue struggled with her defence. The fourth seeds ran away with the momentum in the end, winning their first European Championships crown. The scoreline read 16-21, 22-20, 21-16.

- A silver sounds bad right now, but we will feel proud ourselves in a week. We were supposed to win this gold, but sometimes you don’t, Thom said.

It is a credit to their fighting spirit as the Germans made two incredible comebacks in two consecutive matches. 

Despite the loss, the French youngsters have a lot to look forward to as they continue their quest to win. 

- We will take a one-week break. Next, we will focus on the upcoming tournaments in Indonesia and Malaysia, Thom detailed out their preparations. 

While his partner Isabel Lohau could not make it two golds against the Stoeva sisters, Lamsfuss continued with Marvin Seidel, where he had left off earlier. In the final match of the tournament, there was no hesitation against the Scots Alexander Dunn/ Adam Hall. The Germans led throughout and found winners with ease. 

- We were mentally very strong and controlled the serve-return situation, Seidel pointed out.

Their sharp attack saw them through 21-17, 21-16 in just over half-an-hour. 

- A great event! Incredible! Two gold medals! Just really, really happy and very, very tired, Lamsfuss was delighted to be the first man in 20 years to win two golds.
