Kirsty Gilmour expects that the Scotland vs. Spain tie is going to be interesting.

Two years ago at the 2020 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships, Scotland made the big surprise clinching the bronze medals and at the same time qualify for the Thomas & Uber Cup. Fast forward two years, Kirsty Gilmour is leading a young team into the Uber Cup event in Aarhus, Denmark.

- It almost feel like two separate events. You kind of forget that this was what got us here, but we have been reflecting this week as a team on that performance. It feels like a long time ago, but there were so many positives that week, Gilmour said.

- We are all excited. We have new members at the team, which is always a fresh injection. It is a big event to have your first cap at, but it is pretty exciting.

Upset coming up?
11 years ago, Kirsty Gilmour made her first cap for Scotland, and this week she will be playing an important role for the team as the number one women’s singles. Scotland will be facing India, Spain and Thailand in the group stage, and the Scots are happy to go into the group stage as the underdog.

- We will never say that we are just here to participate. We have a great chance in all matches against Spain and against India, it can be a tough one for them. I would put my money on us. It would be a good opportunity to make an upset, Gilmour said.

- Thailand is going to be a big task. Their women’s singles are strong even without Ratchanok here, so that will be a tough test, but we are ready for it.

Go watch Scotland vs. Spain
On Thursday, Clara Azurmendi from Spain told Badminton Europe that she is looking forward to the fight against Kirsty Gilmour, and the Scot is welcoming the challenge.

- I expected nothing less from Clara and the Spanish team. I hope that we have the same mentality in our team, Gilmour said.

- All matches against Spain are going to be super interesting.

Is Scotland vs. Spain one to watch?

For sure! I will be watching, Gilmour said.

Thomas & Uber Cup kicks off on Saturday, and Badminton Europe will be on site for the full event. Don’t miss on any of the action and keep up to date with the latest updates, photos, and more exclusive content on our website, Facebook and Instagram.
