For the first time, Chinese Taipei has won an Olympic gold medal.

Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin from Chinese Taipei already made history qualifying for the Olympic final in Tokyo.

Before the Tokyo Olympics the nation had never won a medal at the Olympics, but with securing the spot in the final, the men’s doubles won the first ever medal for Chinese Taipei. Later, on Saturday afternoon, Tai Tzu Ying followed up and secured a spot in the women’s singles final.

Solid performance
The Chinese 2018 World Champions, Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen took the lead in the opening 10-6, but as we have seen during the Olympic Games, Lee and Wang have the skills to bounce back. After 18 minutes of play, the Chinese Taipei underdog won the first game 21-18.

It has been a memorable event for the Taipei pair, who in the group finished second, before they beat Endo/Watanabe (Japan) and Indonesian legends, Ahsan/Setiawan in the knockout stage. And the memories from the 31 July 2021, will always be in the back of the head of Wang and Lee.

For the first time, Chinese Taipei, claimed a gold medal at the Olympics. Lee and Wang won the second game 21-12 and are now Olympics Champions.

Bronze for Malaysia
The bronze medals at the Tokyo Olympics go to Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik. The young Malaysians won in three games against Indonesian veterans, Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan.

The Indonesians won the opening game 21-17, before the Malaysians won the second game with the same score. In the decider, Yik and Chia took the lead from the beginning and won 21-14.

- First of all, I think this is unbelievable. We won a bronze medal. Of course, we are really happy with this and we're satisfied with our performance today.

- I want to thank all the Malaysians, all the supporters for cheering for us - our association, our coaches, our family and our parents. Without their support, their motivation, we wouldn't be coming to this stage, Chia said
