Just weeks after the young Danish talents Anders Antonsen and Rasmus Gemke put on an all-Danish men’s singles thriller at the Denmark Open, we are in for a treat as Daniel Lundgaard/Mathias Thyrri and Jeppe Bay/Lasse Molhede won their respective marathon matches to set up an all-Danish men’s doubles final.
In the first men’s doubles of the day, the Dutch pair Ruben Jille/Ties Van Der Lecq saved four game points in the opener but failed to convert. Likewise, Bay and Molhede wasted two match points as the Dutch pair managed to force a decider. In yet another turn of events, the Danes scored six straight points, when Jille and Lecq led 18-15 in the third game, to finally win the match on their third match point 22-20, 20-22, 21-18 in the 59th minute.
An upset for Germany
Another young Danish pair of Lundgaard and Thyrri battled it out with the fifth seeds Jones Ralfy Jansen/Peter Kaesbauer to emerge victorious in a three-game thriller. They came back strongly after being outplayed in the first game. Leading through most part of both the latter games, they won 12-21, 21-18, 21-18 in 58 minutes.
It will be the first meeting between the Danish pairs tomorrow.
New prospects for Denmark
The 20-year-olds Amalie Magelund/Freja Ravn handed a shock defeat to their seniors and second seeds Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen in straight games 21-12, 21-17. They have achieved their best-ever result so far by reaching the finals of a Super 100 event. However, the young Danish pair face a tough task tomorrow in form of the former world number eight pair Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva.
In tune with their successful campaign so far, the Stoeva sisters had an easy first game win over Debora Jille/Cheryl Seinen in their semifinal encounter. However, the Dutch gave it their all as they ran their opponents close in the second. At 17-17, the Stoevas reeled off four points to seal the match 21-8, 21-17.
Mixed doubles breakdown
There were no surprises as Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Herttrich made their second consecutive final after a memorable win in Denmark two weeks ago. They convincingly beat Ronan Labar/Anne Tran 21-13, 21-17 in 33 minutes.
They will face Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Boje for the title, who overcame the second seeds Robin Tabeling/Selena Piek 21-19, 21-16. With the record tied at 1-1 and both their previous encounters hotly contested, it will be an amazing mixed doubles final tomorrow.
