The 36-year old would have liked to play until 2024, but he is not ready to be part of a new men’s doubles project at Badminton Denmark.

After 19 years one of the most winning men’s doubles players in the last two decades and Badminton Denmark have chosen to part ways: Carsten Mogensen is leaving the Danish National training.

The reason for Mogensen to leave the national training is that Badminton Denmark is creating four new doubles pairs, which shall support the development of the future stars. Carsten Mogensen was included in the project, but he has chosen to decline the option.

- I cannot see myself in this project. My goal was to play until 2024, but of course that should be in a project I would commit myself to, Mogensen said in a press release from Badminton Denmark.

- I respect that Badminton Denmark prioritise the young players, and I am sad to leave, but I will continue to play in the Danish league, he added.

Thanks for the memories
At Badminton Denmark, they had hoped to see Mogensen continue.

- Together with Mathias Boe, Carsten has been the best Danish men’s doubles in recent times. His results speak for themselves, and we should be happy for all the results and memories Carsten and Mathias gave to Danish badminton and the Danish fans, Jens Meibom, Director of Sports at Badminton Denmark, said.

Carsten Mogensen is the fourth player to retire from the Danish national team since April: Mathias Boe, Mads Conrad-Petersen and Jan Ø. Jørgensen have all chosen to retire.

Impressive resume
The very first European Games winner, two-time European Champion, seven-times European Men’s Team Champion, two-times European Mixed Team Champion, won his first European title back in 2001, where he won the men’s doubles category at the European Junior Championships.

Other notable results for Carsten Mogensen includes Olympic Games silver medal 2012, World Championships runner-up in 2013 and bronze medallist in 2014 and two All England titles.

Badminton Europe wishes Carsten Mogensen  a happy retirement after an impressive international career and good luck in the Danish league and in civilian life.
