Croatia to host European Championships for the first time ever

The 2020 European Senior Championships will be held in the Croatian city of Zadar 3-10 October. The city on the Adriatic coast will be an optimal place for the large contingent of European senior players who have anxiously been waiting for this allocation for many months. This will be the first time in history that Croatia hosts a European Championships in badminton.

The venue in which the numerous matches will be played has been hosting major events before, but it is a first for badminton. Back in 2009, the World Handball Championships was played in the amazing Kresimir Cosic Hall – one part of the impressing Sportski Centar Visnjik, which contains many different sport venues for various sports.

-First of all we are of course pleased that we have been able to secure the allocation for the European Senior Championships – and the fact that it will be played in such an amazing venue, in such a great city, that just makes the joy even bigger. We know that it has taken time to find the right host, but we are sure that our many senior players from all over Europe will have a great stay in Zadar, where they can enjoy the local atmosphere, cuisine and culture – but also play in a professional setup which we will ensure together with our good partner, YONEX, and the local organisation led by Denis Karlovic and Ratko Galjer, Deputy General Secretary at Badminton Europe, Jimmy Andersen commented.

Going to be one to remember
President of the Croatian Badminton Association, Ratko Galjer, is also pleased and proud about the allocation, and the fact that a European Badminton Championships is coming to his country.

-I am glad to announce and confirm that Croatia has taken over the organisation of a European Championship in badminton for the first time in its history. We want to make badminton a more popular sport in Croatia and we hope for a great number of arrivals in Croatia. The city of Zadar, with its cultural heritage, natural beauties, and superb gastronomy, has a lot to offer our dear guests who we would like to welcome to Croatia this way, Galjer said to Badminton Europe.

Players from all over Europe will be able to reach Zadar relatively smoothly. Zadar has its own airport with good connections both in and outside of Croatia, and the airport in Split is also just over an hour away by car. Badminton Europe and the Croatian Badminton Association are expecting to see more than 1,000 senior players in the age groups 35+ to 75+ during the 8-days event in October.

President of Badminton Europe, Peter Tarcala, is extremely pleased about the fact that a new country is hosting a European Badminton Championships for the first time.

-Our European Championships is for everyone – for every country to host. Having this year’s European Senior Championships held in Croatia is surely going to be one to remember – not only because of the city, the venue and the many players, but especially because it is a first for Croatia. My events team will do its utmost to assist the organisers, and together they will provide the best possible conditions for the more than 1,000 players and their entourage coming to enjoy the event. I am thankful to the Croatian Badminton Association and its president, Ratko Galjer, for taking on this responsibility – but I am sure they will not regret it.

More information about the 2020 European Senior Championships will be announced to all Member Associations in due time.
