Seeds fall early in Spain

The main draws of all categories have begun at the Barcelona Spain Masters, and already we have had some notable results.

A major upset occurred in the men’s singles, with Lucas Corvee, who was left out of the talent-filled French men’s team last week, faced fourth seed, Wang Tzu Wei in the first round. Corvee came up against the Taiwanese star last year in Thailand, and he seemed stylistically suited to the number 15 in the world, only narrowly losing in three games.

This time it was much the same, but perhaps with the Frenchman winning the opening game, it gave him more control of the match. Wang Tzu Wei fought back to force a decider, but Corvee had enough left in the tank to win the match 21-19, 16-21, 21-16, showing everyone what he is capable of. He now faces Malaysia’s Daren Liew in the next round.

All smiles for French singles
Another Frenchman with a positive result today was Brice Leverdez, who faced Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, a player he has met many a time on the circuit. Coming into today, their head to head stood at three apiece, but after a fine display from Leverdez, he edges ahead with a 21-10, 16-21, 21-13 win. In the second round, he will now encounter first seed Viktor Axelsen, in a repeat of the 2018 European Championships semifinal.

Number three-seeded mixed doubles pair, Chris and Gabby Adcock arrived in Barcelona hopeful of going deep into the tournament in order to regain pole position in the English road to Tokyo over Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith. However, they faced the freshly crowned German national champions in Jones Ralfy Jansen and Kilasu Ostermeyer and were subsequently defeated in two extremely tight games, 21-19, 23-21. The Germans will now face Danes, Mathias Bay-Smidt and Rikke Soby.

Fourth seeds Ellis and Smith, on the other hand, overcame a valiant challenge by teammates Gregory Mairs and Victoria Williams, 21-9, 27-29, 21-16. In yet another English affair, they will now face Tom Wolfenden and Jenny Moore, who defeated Russian pair Dremin and Dimova.
