At the World Championships 2019 in Basel, Switzerland, Badminton Europe spoke to Lin Dan and Kento Momota about the men’s singles situation.

Kento Momota, the world’s number one in men’s singles despite his young age, has a lot of experience and knowledge about the men’s singles category. In the interview, he commented on all the young upcoming talents.

- I think there are a lot of young players coming forward, and I am sure that we all together will promote the sport of badminton in the best possible way, Momota said.

Not a big difference
Lin Dan, one of the oldest men’s singles players on the circuit, has been in the game for quite some time.  He has seen the development in men’s singles throughout his career, and this is what he had to say about the men’s singles category at the moment.

- It is quite competitive between the men’s singles players at the moment, and there is not much difference between all of them. Even the slightest advantage in the game could lead to a different outcome in the match, he said.

The next legend
A lot of people see him as the best badminton player there has ever been. When talking about the next ‘legend’ after him, he says it can be hard to predict.

- Well, there is not much difference between all the players. It is probably easy to win once or twice or to be a champion. But it is very difficult to win all the time for a long time. If you can promote badminton for people to see the beauty of it and for it to be a very influential sport, that is what makes a legendary player.
