At the forefront of the rising talents of French badminton are mixed doubles pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue. They are guests for the latest BEC podcast which is available to listen now.

Gicquel and Delrue, both a part of the European Mixed Team Junior Championship winning team in 2017, have taken to senior badminton well and continued their medal-winning ways. One such medal was the bronze won at this year’s European Games in Minsk. Talking about this moment, Gicquel said.

-We were very proud. It’s not like the European Championships with only badminton players in the hall. There were a lot of other sports there as well. It was quite something for us.

On the podcast, the pair also discuss their successes, their period of no confidence, the positivity now in French badminton, their preferred categories and of course the road to Tokyo.

The first goal is to learn a lot
All roads at the moment lead to Tokyo, so we asked the pair how they are approaching the Olympics if they manage to qualify.

-I think it is more about getting experience at the Tokyo Olympics. If we play good, then there is no reason why not to get a medal. But I think the first goal is to learn a lot when we are there, Delrue stated.

Many big future tournaments on the calendar are coming to France. In 2020, we will have the European Men’s and Women’s Team Championships. In 2024, we have the Paris Olympics, followed by a World Championships also in Paris for 2025. Reacting to this, Delrue said.

-I think it is an excellent thing to have a lot of big tournaments in France. The women’s team hasn’t won a medal before at the European Team Championships, so I think it will be a really good thing to win the first one in France.
