On 15 and 16 November the National Umpire Education Programme took place in Dublin, Ireland. The National Umpire Education Programme is part of the BEC BASIS Programme. Nine umpire tutors from ten member associations gathered to work on how to enhance and develop their domestic umpire education system.

This was the third edition of the Level one National Umpire Education Programme and in total thirty-nine participants from thirty member associations participated. During those three courses, the key topics covered were:

  • Explain how the BEC umpire assessment panel works and is organized
  • Give an overview of the level expected from the BEC umpires
  • Share the best practices among all European countries

Badminton Europe’s Umpire Coordinator, Sven Serré, was one of the tutors for this course and believes that it was a great opportunity to gather many countries together in order to help them to “bring their national level of umpires closer to the required BEC standard and continue to have and deliver all together the best umpires in the world”.

The next step

In 2020 and 2021, the Level two of the National Umpire Education Programme will be organized and the member associations will be divided geographically in seven regional zones. For each zone, a maximum of seven member associations will be invited and each will send one umpire tutor and one national umpire with good international potential to a BEC junior or U17 circuit tournament.

“The objective will be two-fold: to develop a regional network of national umpire tutors and to bring together talented umpires to coach them towards the BEC level. We hope that through this Level two, we can deliver over thirty new talented umpires and strengthen the relationships among the member associations in the field of umpire coaching and training,” said Sven Serré.

If you would like to have more information about the umpire education and/or would like a member of the BEC umpire assessment panel to deliver a workshop in your country during a national or international tournament, please contact Matthieu Hecker, BEC Events Officer at matthieu.hecker@badmintoneurope.com
