Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue played their ‘best game ever’ beating former All England winners and world number four, Watanabe and Higashino from Japan.

Nobody expected the French to win their opening match at the Denmark Open, but watching the match there was no doubt: If they hit their top level, Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue can beat the absolute top pair in the mixed doubles category.

The French won in three games, 21-19 13-21 21-19, against the 2018 All England champions, Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino.

- This is our best result ever. No doubt, Thom Gicquel said.

- We played without pressure and it is nice to beat a top five pair, Delphine Delrue added.

A turning point
Making it to the second round is a turning point for the young talents, who had not been reaching their top level recently.

- The lasts months we have not been playing very well, and I really tried not to put pressure on myself today, and maybe that is one of the reasons why we played well, Gicquel mentioned.

- I think we served really good today. We started the rallies in a good position, and I think we were good keeping the attack, Delrue explained.

Ready for Chinese Taipei
In the second round the European Games medallists will face Wang and Cheng from Chinese Taipei, who they beat in US Open last July.

- It was close in two games, but it is going to be a good match tomorrow, the French said.
