French world number two pair take the ‘standing’ mixed doubles title, whilst Lucas Mazur makes it a double with a singles gold and Israel take the ‘wheelchair’ mixed.

Faustine Noel recovered from a back injury, which caused her to withdraw from the World Championships last month, just in time to be back to form this week in Thailand. She had no practice prior to this event whatsoever, yet she comes away with a gold in SL3-SU5 mixed doubles with Lucas Mazur and a bronze in the women’s doubles with Lenaig Morin.

She and Mazur were dominant this week, and with the absence of the world’s best pair from Indonesia, the French top seeds came through the whole event unscathed, not a single game dropped. Importantly, they beat Thailand’s Teamarrom and Saensupa in the final, who are chasing them down in the world rankings and had the home crowd behind them. Noel had this to say after the final:

- The match was really tense but we didn’t lose our focus. The second game was point for point and could have gone either way, but we were confident.

- I have the same goal for next week in China, aiming for gold in the mixed and to do even better in the women’s doubles.

Mazur also took the SL4 men’s singles title with a 21-7, 21-6 over Shin Kyung Hwan (KOR) in the final.

WH1-WH2 mixed doubles

With the focus at this stage of 2019 on those events that will feature in the 2020 Paralympics, it provides chances for athletes to take titles elsewhere.

Israel’s Amir Levi and Nina Gorodetzky have quietly climbed to the world number one spot in wheelchair mixed doubles. Number one seeds this week, they were untroubled until the final when Abu Hubaida (IND) and Cynthia Mathez (SUI) forced them to a third game decider. The Israelis took it 21-13 to win gold and maintain their ranking.

With the absence of Team China, and with strong pairs like Jakarin Homhual and Amnouy Wetwithan from Thailand and Mi Young-Chin and Valeska Knoblauch from Germany focussing on the events that earn them Paralympic qualifying points, the field was wide open. A great time for Levi and Gorodetzky to take advantage.
