Rikke Soby and Mathias Bay-Smidt are ready to be the new Danish mixed doubles pair on the absolute top level.

Not many expected Rikke Soby and Mathias Bay-Smidt to become National Champions in February. A few weeks later they created a surprise by winning the BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament Swiss Open in March 2019.

- The partnership with Rikke is going very well. We work well together, and it has been a very cool year for us until now winning the National Championships and then Swiss Open. These victories gave us confidence and pushed us to the next level, Mathias Bay-Smidt said.

Partners since 2018
Soby and Bay-Smidt have been walking on court together since Swiss Open 2018, and the goals for the youngsters are big:

- We hope to show an even better level at the World Championships in Basel in August.

- Our long-term goals have not been discussed yet, but we will for sure do our best to reach the absolute top level in the World, so the Olympics in 2024 can be a reality for us.

Ready to take over
The retirement of Christinna Pedersen left a gap in Danish mixed doubles.

With no active Danish pair in top 40 on the World Ranking it is fair to say, that Danish mixed doubles have to reinvent itself, and Mathias Bay-Smidt is ready to take the lead in that project.

- Somehow it is exciting, because it gives me more responsibility in the daily training, and I hope that I can fill that gap.

- The competition on the European level has increased, and there are a lot of pairs, which are on a good track. It is cool with such a high level in the European tournaments.

Focus on mixed doubles
Bay-Smidt has also shown good results in men’s doubles but now all focus is on the partnership with Rikke Soby.

- Rikke and I have developed well within the last year, so it is great that it is also shown at the tournaments.

- I for sure hope (we have the potential to win a gold medal at the Olympics or the World Championships), but the most important to me is that I get the most out of every day, so I continue to develop, Bay-Smidt stated.

Mathias Bay-Smidt and Rikke Soby will enter the World Championships in Basel as unseeds.
