Denmark’s Anders Antonsen lost the Men’s Singles Final at the Indonesian Open on Sunday in a marathon long match that went the distance.

The Super 1000 event came to a close today after beginning on Tuesday and following the Dane’s loss there’s been no European winners in Jakarta.

In an hour and a half long match-up, Antonsen, the world number 11 left everything on the line but eventually fell to a 21-18, 24-26, 21-15 defeat to Tien Chen Chou (Chinese Tapei).

Chou led from the off, scoring five consecutive points when at 1-1 in the opening game and went onto control the opener to take a huge step towards the trophy with a 21-18 win.

The Dane fought back in a back and forth second game which saw numerous lead changes. It went to a tiebreak but Antonsen held his nerve to win it 26-24 and take it into a third game.

Unfortunately for Antonsen however, the third game went a lot like the first and Chou comfortably ran out a 21-15 winner to close out the match and win his championship of the year.

Compatriots battle for titles

Elsewhere, there were a lot of intriguing match-ups between players from the same country on finals day.

In the Men’s Doubles it was the two home pairings of Marcus Fernaldi Giedeon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo (Indonesia) taking on the pair of Mohammed Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia).

The World number one pair of Gideon and Sukamuljo managed to extend their head to head record to 6-2 against Ahsan and Setiawan with a 21-19, 21-16 win in front of a home crowd which would have been happy with either result.

Also, in both the Mixed and Women’s Doubles there were also two pairs from the same country meeting in the final.

In the Women’s Doubles it was an all Japenese affair between Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota against Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi.

Fukushima and Hirota, the competitions 2
nd seeds, managed to come away with the trophy with a 21-16, 21-18 win.

Whilst the Mixed Doubles was the battle of the two top seeds from China with the top seeds of Huang Ya Qiong and Zheng Si Wei taking on the 2
nd seeds Huang Dongping and Wang Yi Lyu.

Huang and Wang found the top seeds just too strong for them on the day with Huang and Zheng running out 21-13, 21-18 winners.
