Martin Rooke beat both of his European rivals to take a place in tomorrow’s semi-finals and a likely number 4 spot in the world rankings.

Team GB’s WH2 Martin Rooke was at his best today in Dublin, after taking top spot in Group F yesterday. Japan’s Daiki Kajiwara tested the Englishman’s resolve once again in the group, a 3 game match that lasted nearly an hour gave Rooke all the match sharpness he needed to come out strongly this morning.

The knockout stages began with a round 16 match against the world number 6, Rick Hellman. The German couldn’t cope with the amount of pressure Rooke put him under from the start, and the match lasted just 35 minutes and ended 21-11, 21-8.

The quarter-final draw this evening could not have been a better choice for Rooke, a repeat of the European Championships final, a man he knows very well, Israel’s Amir Levi, the world number 3. The match was not a repeat of that marathon in Rodez last year however, this time Rooke started well and got even better.

He dictated the pace and looked cool even when under pressure. The 21-9, 21-14 may even flatter the Israeli who came back at Rooke during the second game, but Rooke closed out the match and rolls onto the semi-finals to face Daniel Chan (HKG).

Importantly this result should see the man from England climb the rankings to a strong seed position at the para-badminton world championships this summer in Basel.

Karin conquers quarter-final

Suisse Karin Suter-Erath, the former world champion, was put under real pressure today by friend and foe in the form of Israel’s Nina Gorodetzky. One of two incredible European performances that went the distance, the match ended 21-18, 18-21, 23-21 with a spinning all-or-nothing reverse shot at match-point that Gorodetzky was unable to return. Incredible scenes at the National Indoor Arena.

The Suisse moves onto face Ikumi Fuke (JPN) in the semis tomorrow, with German world number 1 Valeska Knoblauch also through in the other half of the draw. She faces Japanese Sarina Satomi whom she has faced numerous times with different outcomes over the last year.
