In less than one week, badminton will be getting underway at the European Games 2019. Lia Salehar from Slovenia spoke about her participation in the biggest multi-sports event in Europe.

Competing in the Women’s Singles, Lia Salehar will be heading to Minsk to participate in her first multi-sports event.

With Chloe Birch (ENG) and Sabrina Jaquet (SUI), the 20-year old has strong and experienced competitors in her group

Speaking to Badminton Europe, Salehar has revealed her ambitions and goals for Minsk.

You have qualified for the European Games in the Women’s Singles, even though you had to deal with some long-lasting injuries last year. How is the status now?

Salehar: Last season, I was pretty unlucky with injuries. In November, I twisted my ankle and I have still not recovered from it completely. I am not 100 percent sure that I will be showing my best game in Minsk, but I am doing everything in my power to make it happen.

Because of your injury, you were not able to qualify in the Women’s Doubles with your sister.

Salehar: I am surprised that I am participating in Women's Singles but not in Doubles. It was my goal to qualify together with Iza, so I feel sad that my injury prevented it. After all, I am fortunate that I could still qualify for the Singles.

What was your reaction, when you knew that you will be going to Minsk?

Salehar: Participating in a multi-sports event, is a new motivation for me. It is nice to see so many players at a high level, fighting for the title. Not only in badminton, but also in other sports.

What are your goals for the tournament?

Salehar: I want to enjoy the game. Since I have not been playing so much lately, I do not put any pressure on myself. However, I will fight for every single point.
