From 24-30 June, badminton will get underway at the European Games 2019 in Minsk. This time, Kirsty Gilmour from Scotland revealed her expectations and ambitions for the biggest multi-sports event in Europe.

Kirsty Gilmour is participating in her first European Games this year. Currently living in Glasgow, the Scot is participating in international tournaments around the world. Her category: Women’s Singles.

- I am really excited for the European Games. I love competing at multi-sport events. There is a different atmosphere, compared to an individual Championship, Gilmour said.

The 25-year-old already became the runner-up at the European Championships twice (2016 & 2017).

- Representing your country is always fun but being on the podium is one of the best feelings in the world. However, I have never managed to stand on that top spot in a major competition, Gilmour said.

Two Commonwealth Games medals for Gilmour

In 2014 and 2018, Gilmour participated in the Commonwealth Games. Both times, she was successful; she won one silver and one bronze medal. Next, to, standing on the podium, Gilmour also experienced the atmosphere at a multi-sports event.

- It is strange, but I love it. Everyone is in the same boat. You eat together, live together, train together. You are in a little bubble with only one thing on your mind: competing. It is very intense but incredible at the same time, she said.

- To be part of Team GB is special for me. Usually, we only come together for the Olympic Games. So, it is going to be a lot of fun, she added.

Aiming for gold in Minsk

Looking towards the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, badminton players can collect valuable world ranking points at the European Games.

With Europe’s top player Carolina Marin not being able to participate in the European Games 2019, the Women’s Singles competition in Minsk will be exciting.

- I would be fighting for the title even if Carolina was competing. Regardless of who is playing the event, I am always aiming for gold. Minsk will be no different, Gilmour revealed her ambitions.
