Badminton Scotland have today confirmed the appointment of Ingo Kindervater as Head of Performance.

Kindervater will relocate from Germany, where he is currently National Doubles Coach for the German Badminton Association, taking up his new position in Scotland on 1 July.

He will be responsible for leading and implementing Badminton Scotland’s high performance programmes to ensure that players and coaches are identified and developed to meet challenging performance standards and speaking today he said:

“I think this is an exciting time for Scottish badminton. We already have a great group of highly talented players, coaches and support staff and I’m really looking forward to becoming part of the team.

“Since I retired from my playing career, I have found a lot of fulfilment in helping young players to develop into world class athletes and I’m thankful for the chance I was given in Germany to do this, but now I am very much looking forward to a new challenge in Scotland.

“I want to create a world class high performance culture in Scotland that allows us to be able to chase the biggest goals in the world of badminton, like competing for medals at World, Commonwealth and Olympic level.”

Kindervater was a world class professional badminton player himself, achieving a career high world ranking of 11 in men’s doubles and representing Germany 97 times in a career spanning 15 years.

As a player he won multiple national and international titles including two Grand Prix Gold events – the 2007 Russian Open and 2012 Bitburger Open – as well as reaching the final of the 2010 French Open Superseries.

He also won several medals at European level, including Germany’s first ever gold medal in the European Mixed Team Championships in 2013.

He competed at the very highest level when he represented Germany at the London 2012 Olympic Games and on retiring from his playing career, Kindervater became involved in the coaching set-up of the German national team, initially as an assistant coach before becoming national doubles coach in 2016.

He coached at Rio 2016, where the German team qualified players in all five events for the first time in their history and since then has focussed his attention on developing Germany’s next generation of talent, including Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich who last year won Germany’s first European mixed doubles bronze medal for 20 years.

Keith Russell, Badminton Scotland’s CEO, said: “Ingo was a world class player and he has developed into a world class coach.

“He has enjoyed numerous successes with the German National Team and I am delighted he has agreed to lead our performance programmes in Scotland.

“Ingo has experienced competitive badminton at every level up to and including the Olympic Games, both as a player and as a coach, and with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification period having just started this experience will be invaluable.

“He has also demonstrated a wealth of experience in coaching young up and coming players, helping them to fulfil their talent and developing them into fully fledged internationalists.

“With our current senior national squad featuring so many young players, Ingo’s ability to develop rising stars is crucial to us as we begin the cycle of building towards the 2022 Commonwealth Games.”
