Denmark advances to the Quarterfinals

After beating Indonesia on Wednesday, Denmark has reached the Quarterfinals of the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2019. England is out of the tournament. 

Denmark versus Indonesia – the last duel of Group 1B was deciding about who will be qualifying for the knockout stage at this year’s Sudirman Cup.
 
After England has been beaten Denmark but lost to Indonesia, they were hoping for their Asian group mates to win. The reason: If Denmark would lose to Indonesia, the team would be out of the tournament – and England would be through to the next round. 

Denmark and Indonesia fight for a medal

However, the defending European Mixed Team Champion had an objection to make. After 177 minutes and four straight matches, Denmark won against Indonesia and advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Continental Championship in Nanning. 

Indonesia has already been qualified for the next stage of the tournament before facing their Danish opponents. 

First win for Christiansen/Thygesen

After Mathias Christiansen/Sara Thygesen and Viktor Axelsen took the lead, Kim Astrup and Mathias Boe had the chance finalise Denmark’s first victory in Nanning. But with Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, they had strong opponents to face.

In the end, the Danes lost in tough matches. 


Then, the pressure has been on Mia Blichfeldt’s shoulders. The 21-year-old showed a strong performance on court. After two games, she won the decisive match for the team. Denmark won 3-2 in total against Indonesia.

The Quarterfinals of the Sudirman Cup 2019 will be getting underway tomorrow and on Friday. The draw will decide about the constellation of the games, after the last match of the group stages have been played today.
