Over the past week, there have been continental championships across Asia, Africa and Pan America, with over six defending champions being successful.

Badminton Europe’s Centre of Excellence player, Kate Foo Kune, competed for her country, Mauritius, at the African Championships - and managed to take the silver medal.

Two title defences in Asia

The podiums across all five categories from the Badminton Asia Championships consisted of players from Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Chinese Taipei.

Kento Momota was one of two categories who had defending champions retaining their spot on the podium, with Wang Yiliu/Huang Dongping also winning to retain the Championship title from last year.

There were new Champions in the Women’s Singles, with Akane Yamaguchi taking the title as well as in Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles. Hiroyuki Endo/Yuta Watanabe took the title against Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the final.

Chen Quingchen and Jia Yifan, who won the YONEX All England this year, beat the same opponents in the final of the Asian Championships as they faced in the prestigious Super 1000 tournament, Japan’s Mayu Matsumoto/Wakana Nagahara.

Six countries share the podiums in Pan America

From the Pan America Championships, the podium positions from five categories were from across six different countries, with Canada being the most prominent nation.

Out of the five categories, three winners successfully defended their titles from last year, all from Canada.

Michelle Li won to retain her title against Brittney Tam, also from Canada who was the number two seed for the Championships, while Jason Anthony Ho Shue/Nyl Yakura managed to keep the title in Men’s Doubles.

Also successfully defending a title was Rachel Honderich/Kirsten Tsai in the Women’s Doubles, who again beat Canadian opponents, Catherine Choi/Josephine Wu.

One title retained in Africa

In the African Continental Championships, the winners’ medals were shared out between just two countries, Nigeria and Algeria.

Just one title was successfully defended in the Championships, and that came in the Mixed Doubles category, with Kocelia Mammeri/Linda Mazri from Algeria taking the title.

In the Women’s Singles, Badminton Europe’s Centre of Excellence player, Kate Foo Kune, was unable to retain her Women’s Singles title, as she was beaten by Dorcas Ajoke Adesokan in the final (12-21, 13-21).
