Clara Azurmendi did not succeed in stunning the Japanese player Saena Kawakani - world ranked number 39 - in order to be part of the last four in Basel.
The 20-year-old Spaniard progressed in the tournament from the qualification draw to the quarterfinals and today's contest included a semi-final spot against the recent All England winner Chen Yufei who trashed Riya Mookerjee early in the morning in two games.
Her opponent was Saena Kawakani. The young Japanese beat Clara’s fellow Spaniard, Sara Peñalver, in the first round. Clara fought back, but the speed and intensity leveled up in this new match. In the end. she lost in two games (21-16, 21-14).
"It was a tough match for me. She was fighting for all points", Azurmendi said shortly after the match.
The former world ranked number two in the Europe Junior Circuit took out positive experience out of the Swiss Open:
"I’m close to these players. It’s a good thing for me. Obviously, I have to improve more and I think it is a good tournament to improve more".
Azurmendi's next tournament will be the Orleans Master that are getting underway next week in France.
