Two of the strongest junior tournaments were hosted by The Netherlands and Germany in the past two weeks. More than 300 players from 37 nations all over the world came together at the Dutch and Junior International!

Sadly no European youngster has made it into the semi-finals of both tournaments. Europe still has a lot to gain when it comes to early talent development, as the results show.

That did not make these tournaments less interesting! These young players really did put on a show! In the later stages of the tournaments matches, the average duration of a three gamer was more than an hour! That is no different from the top level matches we see at the BWF Super World Tour.

An honorable mention can be given to Russian players Georgii Karpov and Anastasiia Shapovalova, who did reach the quarter finals, but lost to the later runner-ups with close scores.

Qianxi & Marwah

These runner-ups were Christian Adinata (Indonesia) in the Yonex Dutch Junior and Han Qianxi (China) in the German Junior. However, Qianxi did succeed to win the Dutch Junior in women’s singles. She kept a very solid game for almost two weeks, until her compatriot Zhou Meng was too much for her in her last match at the German Junior final.

Also Nita Violina Marwah (Indonesia) had a succesfull run as she reached three finals! She was definitely the queen of the Dutch Junior with two titles in women’s and mixed doubles. She was clearly exhausted during the mixed doubles final, but Feng Yanzhe & Lin Fangling could not break her.

At the German Junior final Marwah was not able to repeat the results as she only reached one final. There Guo Lizhi & Li Yijing were able to take revenge over her and Putri Syaikah from the Dutch junior semi-final.

Equal opponents

Marwah/Syaikah and Lizhi/Yijing were not the only ones who faced each other twice in these tournaments. For example: Adinata beat Hyeon Seung Park (South Korea) during the semi-finals of the Dutch Junior in three long games. A week after, Adinata was not able to do this again, which eventually enabled Park to win the German Junior!

Dutch junior mixed doubles runner-ups Yanzhe & Fangling beat the first seeded Indonesian pair Leo Rolly Carnando & Indah Cahya Sari Jamil in quarter finals. In the quarter finals the week after, Carnando & Cahya reclaimed their win, but it was not enough to full fill their seeding.

Very dominant in both tournaments were men’s doubles pair Di Zijian & Wang Chang (China). They were never in trouble and were significally better than the other pairs. Now wait and see if they will be the next world junior champions or even be the next men’s doubles stars!
