Tai Tzu Ying was vowing to win her third consecutive All England title. A feat that only five other women in history have achieved.
Standing in her way was a Chen Yufei, who was playing some great Badminton this week, beating the highly fancied Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-final.
It was Tai Tzu Ying who found herself behind in the first game. And despite managing to pull the score back a little, it wasn’t enough. Tai Tzu Ying clearly stepped up the pace, but the resilient Chen Yufei was not fazed and secured a surprise two game All England victory.
Speaking to the newly crowned All England champion Chen Yufei, we asked about her emotional fall to the ground when the last shuttle hit the ground. She said
-I was so happy and excited, this was my way to release all of it
The double
The big surprise package from last year and reigning champions, Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino were eyeing up an All England double.
However, the world number ones were on the other side of the net aiming to stop them. Although they were 3 match-points away from being knocked out in the semi-finals.
The Chinese current World Champions took the opening game. Then it looked set that Watanabe and Higashino would take it into a decider. At one point have a 14-7 lead, and even having a game point. But it was Zheng and Huang who wanted it more and held their nerve to win their first All England title.
