On Thursday, the First Round of the VICTOR Welsh International got underway. The German player, Kai Schäfer, spoke with Badminton Europe about his ambitions and expectations for the tournament.
From 28th of November until the 1st of December, one of the last tournaments of 2018 gets underway: the VICTOR Welsh International. Around 300 players have travelled to Cardiff to participate in the tournament.
One of those players is Kai Schäfer from Germany. Seeded number two, he is one of the favourites in Men’s Singles.
- The Welsh International is my last tournament this year. I am looking forward to it because I have good memories related to Cardiff, Schäfer revealed to Badminton Europe.
First round and first meeting
While the qualification of the VICTOR Welsh International already took place on Wednesday, the first matches of the first round get underway today at 9.00 AM (local time).
Kai Schäfer’s opponent for today is Joran Kweekel from the Netherlands. The first meeting between the German and the Dutch is also the meeting between the 104th in the world and the 255th.
Regarding the better ranking and seeding position, Schäfer has good chances to win.
- The first match of a tournament is always a bit difficult, but I think that I have enough experience to handle this. My goal is to win the title, he said.
