Viktor Axelsen has confirmed that he will withdraw from the upcoming French Open due to a foot injury.
The former world number one was recently knocked out of the Denmark Open in the quarterfinals by his fellow countryman Anders Antonsen.
Disappointing blow for Axelsen
The Dane was due to play Indian 26-year-old Sai Praneeth Bhamidipati in the round of 32 on Wednesday and has expressed his disappointment, over pulling out of the tournament on social media.
- It is disappointing because I had been much looking forward to playing here, Viktor Axelsen posted on his Instagram account.
- I have been dealing with pain in my ankle for the past few months now…after multiple scans, a lot of treatment and meetings with doctors, I have decided to take some time off to take care of my foot, he added.
The second player to drop out
Axelsen joins fellow European number one Carolina Marin, in withdrawing from the tournament in France.
The Spaniard made her decision on Saturday that she was not going to take part in Paris, due to an injury that she had at the Denmark Open.
Axelsen’s replacement in the tournament is Brazilan 21-year-old Ygor Coelho, who will face Axelsen’s original opponent, Sai Praneeth Bhamidipati.
