With the Dutch Open approaching its finish tomorrow in the finals, there are five European pairs playing for winners ware in the doubles category tomorrow in Almere!
The first pair to go through were English Mixed Doubles pair Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith who won in an all-European semi-final against Jacco Arends/Selena Piek.
The top seeds managed to cool the nerves by dominating the first game against the third seeds which resulted in an impressive 21-12 score.
The second game was not as straightforward for Ellis/Smith but they managed to prevail and won the second 21-18 giving them a final match tomorrow against Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue from France.
Crowds can make the difference
Lauren Smith, speaking to Badminton Europe claimed that despite going off the game plan slightly, the Danish supporters inspired her and Marcus Ellis onto victory.
Smith also expressed her delight about reaching the final tomorrow and their performance in the majority of the match.
We are really happy to have reached the final again here in Almere, we were very happy with how we played for a game and a half in the semi-final, Smith said.
The Dutch really fought back hard and we perhaps went off game plan a little. But we fought hard to win in front of a supportive Dutch crowd. We're excited to play tomorrow again! She added.
Who is in the final?
In the Women’s Singles, it is Mia Blichfeldt from Denmark competing against Qi Xuefei from China, in what is expected to be a very interesting match.
In the Men’s Singles, Mark Caljouw will be looking to impress the home crowd in Almere, playing against June Wei Cheam from Malaysia.
The Men’s Doubles it will be Jelle Maas/Robin Tabeling representing Europe against the number two seeds Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira/Ade Yusuf Santoso, from Indonesia.
In the Women’s Doubles, the top seeds, Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva will be looking to continue their impressive form against Dutch pair Selena Piek/Cheryl Seinen.
Finally, for the Mixed Doubles, the top seeds Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith will be looking to take the title against Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue and take it into the Denmark Open.
