Spaniard Pablo Abian (pictured) created the biggest upset on day 3 at the World Championships in Guangzhou, China. The unseeded Abian beat Ajay Jayaram of India 21-9, 21-17 in just 30 minutes. Jayaram ousted Hong Kong's 12th seed Wing Ki Wong in the first round on Monday.

After the match, Abian celebrated the victory in a very emotional way. The Spanish number one shuttler will play 7th seed and last edition's quarter-finalist Tien Minh Nguyen from Vietnam tomorrow to book a place in Friday's quarter-finals.

Zwiebler and Jørgensen in great shape

Marc Zwiebler (Germany) and Denmark's Jan Ø. Jørgensen will join Abian in the last 16 stage of the event in Southern China. While Zwiebler easily defeated Toby Penty of England in two straight games, Jørgensen only lost the focus in the second game (21-10, 19-21, 21-10). The Danish number one will now face fourth seed Thai veteran Boonsak Ponsana, who defeated European Vice Champion Henri Hurskainen of Sweden 21-7, 15-21, 21-15 in the men's singles second round.

Adcock and Ellis fighting qualities not enough

Chris Adcock and Andy Ellis showed all their fighting qualities but it was not enough as England hopes fell one after another on day three of the World Championships in Guangzhou today.

Adcock and Ellis were up against Zhang Nan and  Biao Chai, the ninth seeds from China. Adcock and Zhang were old rivals, the England star having lost to him in the mixed doubles final at the 2011 World Championships at Wembley.

Today the England pair lost the opening game of their men's doubles second round 21-11 but roared back to level the match by taking the second 21-17 before the Chinese pair regained control to take the decider 21-8 after 49 minutes.

Olympic silver medalists Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen eased through to the third round with an straight and undisputed win over a pair from the Philippines. Tomorrow the former world number one pair will get a tough "test of form" against Chinese Nan Zhan/Biao Chai.

Linda Zetchiri showed her skills

in the women's singles Scotland 19-year-old Kirsty Gilmour showed her potential by taking Taiwan's sixth seed Tzu Ying Tai to three games before losing 21-12 20-22 21-6 as well as Bulgarian Petya Nedelcheva who bowed out of the competition but putting up a fantastic fight against Eriko Hirose of Japan only losing 21-11, 16-21, 18-21. 

Nedelcheva's compatriot Linda Zetchiri defeated 12th seed Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Taiwan 21-16, 21-17 to reach the 3rd round of the event in the TianHe Indoor Gymnasium with a 10,000 spectator capacity. Zetchiri is joined in the last 16 stage by young Spaniard Carolina Marin, who overcame Thailand's Busanan Ongbumrungpan [#14] 21-12, 17-21, 21-14.
