Mixed day for Europe.

As we approach the end of the BWF Total World Championships in China, world number one Viktor Axelsen bowed out of the competition as we were treated to two of the best playing today in the Quarter-Finals.

Carolina Marin after beating Sayaka Sako in the third round took on Saina Nehwal who progressed to the quarter-finals after an impressive win over Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon.

Viktor Axelsen came up against China’s Chen Long after beating his last opponent Ng Ka Long Angus in the last 16.

Marin through to the Semi-Finals.

Marin managed to take the match over two games in comfortable fashion as she faced the Indian number six seed this morning.

The first game started in the Spaniard's favour as Nehwal didn’t really get out of first gear as Marin took the game 21-6.

The number ten seed for the tournament did try and hit back at her opponent in the second but Marin was too strong and took the second game 21-11. Marin now heads to the Semi-Final to play the number seven seed He Bingjiao.

Axelsen out of the World Championships.

Meanwhile in the men’s singles, the world number one from Denmark, Viktor Axelsen crashed out after being beaten by Chen Long, ending his hope for retaining the title.

The first game was very close with Long taking it 19-21, with Axelsen’s slow start costing him the game, as he was slow out of the blocks meaning his ending didn’t mean anything.

In the second game, Axelsen was expected to start as he finished the first, but he was again disappointed with his performance, getting beat 11-21 by Chen Long who now progresses to the Semi-Final against Shi Yuqi.
