Just one seeded European lost today in the Huamark Indoor Stadium, elsewhere it was a regular day at the office.. except for a certain Sun Jong Lie.

Outstanding performance of the day for Europe goes to Netherlands’ Joey (Sun Jong) Lie, who won not only his first but also his second ever SS6 men’s singles match, and advances through to the knock-out stages of an International competition for the very first time.

Lie was up against the 5/6 seed Chu Man Kai from Hong Kong yesterday in Group F, and started off his Thailand 18 campaign the same way he has done every International he has ever played. With a defeat in his opening group match.

But something was different this morning. Even Joey Lie couldn’t say what in his post-match interview, but he didn’t care. The Dutch player was in emphatic form against the new Indian Jagadish Chanappa, a straight games win and his first ever victory gave him a new found confidence as he went into his final group match at 6.20pm to fight for a place in the last 16.

He had to face Ireland’s Andrew Moorcroft, a player he has never beaten. And in under 30 minutes he had dispatched the Irishman and made his way to the knockouts, the game ended 21-12, 21-17. This win set up a knockout stage match against Moorcroft’s teammate, the other 5/6 seed Niall McVeigh tomorrow.

“the match against the Indian gave me a lot of confidence. I have met Andrew before a couple of times, the last time was the Europeans in Beek and went to 3 sets so today gave me some revenge. 

Tomorrow against Niall, I am going to have to be very focussed and be very fast around the court, and then we will see what happens.”

Mroz undone by Indonesian to upset the draw

Poland’s Para Star Bartlomiej Mroz had to face the up and coming Dheva Anrimusthi in the SU5 men’s single Group C today. The Indonesian was fresh from a gold and silver medal earned in Ireland last month to take on the Polish ¾ seed here in Bangkok.

Mroz’s loss didn’t see him go out of the tournament, but does mean he falls to the bottom half of the draw and is now scheduled to face his European rival Ilker Tuzcu of Turkey in the last 16. His record against Tuzcu is not that great and that match up is set to be one of the highlights of Friday’s play in the Huamark Stadium.

Elsewhere things seem to be going to plan for the Europeans hunting a fist full of medals in Thailand this week.
