Men’s singles shuttler Chou Tien Chen makes history for Taiwan with his maiden title in Singapore. The world no. 7 beat Hsu Jen Hao in straight games in an all-Taiwanese affair at the 355.000 Dollars event.

At the age of 28 years, Chou claimed a slice of history for the Southeast-Asian nation on Sunday, becoming the first men’s singles player from Taiwan to win the Singapore Open title. Top seeded Chou ended Hsu’s challenge 21-13, 21-13 to claim the title and pocketing US$26,625 in prize money.



Victory will give confidence for Nanjing



“This will give me a lot of confidence for the World Championships. The last time I won a major Tour title was in 2014. It has been four years – a rather long time since I’ve last won – so this is a breakthrough. I feel that I have been improving and that I can win more titles,” said Chou speaking to the BWF.



Major upset in the mixed doubles


Malaysia's mixed doubles pair of Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai created a major upset to win their first BWF World Tour Super 500 title.


Soon Huat/Shevon defeated Olympic champions and current world no 1 Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia 21-19, 21-18 to win the Singapore Open crown.



From a European perspective, the best result was achieved by Germany’s Isabel Herttrich and Carla Nelte as they reached the semi-final stage in Singapore.
