England’s Marcus Ellis matched his top seed billing, as he along with partners Chris Langridge and Lauren Smith collected the men’s and mixed doubles titles at the YONEX Canada Open, in Calgary.

It began with a fantastic encounter in the men’s doubles as Ellis and Langridge managed to edge out a 19-21, 21-18, 22-20 over Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Emil Seidel. The Olympic champions started off well as they pulled away from their opponents late on to take the opening 21-19. After that, the German pair found a lead of their own halfway through the second set and took the contest to a decider after taking set number two 21-18.

The third set saw both pairs take the lead on multiple occasions. As they got towards the end of the set, Lamsfuss and Seidel gave themselves three championship points as they moved into a 20-17 lead. However, Ellis and Langridge pulled through with gritted teeth and won five consecutive points to complete an unbelievable turnaround to win the deciding set 22-20.

It was a much easier outing for Ellis in the mixed doubles final that closed the days proceedings. Along with playing partner Lauren Smith, they quickly saw off German pair Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich 21-13, 21-4. The German pair never took the lead, and a strong start in both sets by the English pair saw the match end in less than half an hour.

Sadly for Herttrich, there was another final earlier in the day where she ended runners-up. This time, it was in the women’s doubles and Herttrich and playing partner Carla Nelte fell in two sets to Japan’s Ayako Sakuramoto and Yukiko Takahata 21-13, 21-15.

Despite a competitive start in both sets, Sakuramoto and Takahata pulled away into a comfortable lead both times and never looked back.
