After a poor showing at the New Zealand Open, the next destination for our travelling Europeans is Sydney, Australia for the 29th CROWNGROUP Australian Open.

Leading the charge once again is Israel’s Misha Zilberman. But sadly, the odds have been stacked against him, as for the second week running he will be opening his campaign against world number 18 B. Sai Praneeth. Despite a brave showing against India’s number three in Auckland, it still remained to be a first round loss. Zilberman will be looking for revenge.

Also following Zilberman across to Australia, are Czech’s Adam Mendrek and Milan Ludik. While Mendrek has a favourable draw, Ludik will be looking for their first singles win in almost a month. But with the Czech number one being pitted against the tournaments fifth seed Tommy Sugiarto from Indonesia, it will be a tough ask for Ludik to stop the drought in the land down under.

Meanwhile, the European action begins in qualifying as Luxembourg’s Robert Mann will be looking for nothing more than a main draw appearance.

In the women’s singles, Swiss number one Sabrina Jaquet will be looking to find the same form that got her a final appearance at the Brazil Open.

For Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova, an opening contest against fourth seed Minatsu Mitani has given the 28-year old a tricky task to accomplish.

Also taking part is England’s Georgina Bland. A string of wins will certainly top of Bland’s agenda, and a victory of Indian teenager Vaishnavi Reddy Jakka is what is required to begin that run.

The mixed doubles sees Israeli’s Zilberman and Polikarpova team up for another week. After a three-set loss in Auckland in their debut as a pair, a match-up against a qualifier in the opening round may see them enter the winners column.

Unfortunately, there will be no European participation in either the men’s or women’s doubles.
